Horror Movies We Love to Help You Celebrate Halloween!

Marcus Ogden - VP Finance

The Beyond (Lucio Fulci, 1981, USA)

The Beyond is my favourite horror film, if not my favourite film in general! Not only is the film a very entertaining gore effect driven ride, but I would avidly claim it as a piece of surrealist art. The film is beautifully shot and scored; however, one must let go of the desire to have the plot be straight-faced and make sense to fully enjoy the experience. The film features ghosts, zombies, a haunted house, great kills, and a portal to hell, what more is there to ask for?

It Follows (David Robert Mitchell, 2014, USA)

Easily one of the scariest and most well-made horror movies I have ever seen. The greatest thing about It Follows is that commentary around it can be framed in two ways: a chilling story of a girl being stalked by supernatural being that takes the form of the people around her, or a serious film with a ridiculous premise centering around a sexually transmitted disease demon. Although the tone of the film is rather dark, and the demon is creepy, the idea of a curse being passed around through sexual intercourse is hilarious. Add in an awkward best friend who’s secretly in love with a protagonist and you have an exploration of the risks horny teenagers will take to get some action. I’m making the film sound like a raunchy teen film but trust me, it truly is chilling

Evil Dead (Sam Raimi, 1983, USA)

My word where do I even begin with this film? I love it because it is creepy, it is unsettling, and it has swiftly become a must see for all horror fans. As the years go on, it is starting to show its age but do not let that scare you away, this movie is more than worth the watch. Brilliantly shot despite the low budget, I love how well Sam Raimi and the actors utilized the space and budget they had. Plus,  who doesn't love a movie about dumb teenagers poking the satanic stuff they know they shouldn't? If you want a horror movie that will creep you out while still providing teens getting killed in the woods, settle down for this masterpiece.
